"And it will be: Like people, like priests. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds." NIV translation
Those false prophets and priests that were not telling the people of the things of God will be punished alongside of the people. This is what Jesus was talking about when He told of the false prophets in "sheep's clothing". (see Matthew 7:15 - 23).
"'They will eat but not have enough; they will engage in prostitution but not increase, because they have deserted the Lord to give themselves to prostitution, to old wine and new, which take away the understanding of my people. They consult a wooden idol and are answered by a stick of wood. A spirit of prostitution leads them astray, they are unfaithful to their God.'" NIV translation
In this passage, God tells of how He will remove His hand of provision from the people that have abandoned Him. Because they forgot that God is the source of all good things, He will stop providing the food they need and will even stop giving them children. They have abandoned the pursuit of righteousness and turned to satisfying the flesh with sex and alcohol. They even turned to idols for answers instead of the Creator of the universe. The same "spirit of prostitution" described in this passage is at work today and even more so as we have so many more things such as cars, homes, and other possessions that can become idols if we do not guard our hearts.
God removed His blessing from the people of Israel at this time and we can be sure that He will do the same thing today. God loves us enough to take away some of our possessions if they start to become more important to us than He is.
"They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar and terebinth, where the shade is pleasant. Therefore your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law to adultery." NIV translation
The people stopped wanting to hear of the things of God because it made them uncomfortable and they wanted to worship God in their own way. They did not teach the things of God to their children and so the "daughters turn to prostitution". You could say the same thing about the way things are today as many want to do their own thing and pull Jesus out of the closet every now and then for worship.
They are not daily walking with the Lord and teaching their children to do so. Therefore, we have all the problems with teenage sex, drugs, alcohol, and everything else that we can think of. Just as God has said that he was going to hold the priests of Hosea's day accountable, He is also going to hold parents accountable for not teaching their children about the things of God.
