Christian Debt Counseling, Advice From The Source Of All Wisdom...

Christian debt counseling looks at debt from a biblical perspective. The Bible shows us the will of God in this matter as well as all the others we face in this life. The teachings may seem somewhat harsh but Jesus warned us about the risks associated with money. The consequences of debt can severely affect a Christians' spiritual walk.

Most of us would probably say that we would rather not be in debt if we had the choice. The Bible tells us to let no debt be outstanding in Romans 13:8. That is God's view of debt.

The first principle we find in the Bible concerning money is titheing. Although it may seem impossible when you are deep in debt, God has said that the first tenth of anything should be set aside as His. Many will say that it is an old testament principle and it is out of date. But, in 1 Corinthians 16:2, we are told that it applies in the New Testament as well.

Many will say that they cannot afford to tithe but the Bible shows us in many places that we will be held accountable for our actions. In short, you will not solve your debt problem through robbing God.

The next biblical principle in christian debt counseling involves a change of attitude. That change will be the result of a different definition of "rich". We, as Americans, do not consider ourselves to be rich because we compare ourselves to billionaires. But, the fact of the matter is that even the poorest among us are among the wealthiest in the world. Therefore, even if you have to eliminate some things to lower your debt load you will still be one of the richest people on the earth.

We, as Americans, cherish our God given freedom. But, the Bible says that a man is a slave to what has mastered him. If that is credit cards, cars, a home, etc. you are a slave to that according to 2 Peter 2:19. Just the idea of being a slave should spur us to action but there is more. Matthew 6:24 tells us that our debt will hinder us from serving GOD.

James 5:1-6, tells us that we will be held accountable because we are the richest people in the world. For more concerning God's view of riches you can study WHAT'S IT WORTH. So, now that we have seen that we are in fact rich, we should be able to sacrifice a few things to buy ourselves out of slavery. **NOTE** Bankruptcy is not an option as a Christian. The biblical teaching on debts is that they must be paid. Bankruptcy is in fact a process of running from your debts. We must keep in mind that our actions, as Christians, can affect the way others see Jesus.

The first step in christian debt counseling is to resolve to get out of debt and stay out.

The next step involves setting priorities and sacrifice to pay your debts. In short, stop spending and start paying off things that are costing you in interest.

It is a good idea, if you have over $5000 in unsecured debt such as credit cards, to consult a christian debt consolidation service. They can work with your creditors to settle your debts in a christian manner.
