Daniel Chapter Five part 3, A study of Daniel 5:13 & 14, Daniel 5:15 & 16, and Daniel 5:17 with our Common Man's Commentary

Daniel 5:13 & 14

"So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, 'Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah? I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.'" NIV translation

Now, we see that Daniel had a reputation for being a man of God. This king, who knew nothing about the one true God, calls on Daniel to interpret the writing. As a Christian, do you have the reputation as someone that is in touch with the things of God and is willing to help others in need? Jesus had that kind of reputation when He walked the earth as we see by the fact that all of the sick always tried to get to Him to be healed.

Daniel 5:15 & 16

"'The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it. Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems. If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.'" NIV translation

Daniel's reward for doing this was to be a promotion to the third highest position in the land. The purple robe and gold chain are symbols of royalty. This is a reminder to us that, if we humble ourselves and serve the Lord, He will lift us up.

Daniel 5:17

"Then Daniel answered the king, 'You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else. Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.'" NIV translation

Daniel agrees to interpret the writing for the king but refuses the rewards that are offered as payment. This is a shining example of ministry for the right purpose. Today, there are many so-called pastors, ministers, bishops, prophets, etc. who are peddling the works of God for their own profit. They are accumulating wealth and power on this earth but do not realize that they are trading their rewards in heaven for the things they possess today for a short time.
